A good holster is one of the most important carry accessories — it must fully protect the trigger guard, retain the firearm securely through physical activity, allow a consistent draw stroke, and be comfortable enough to wear all day. Inside-the-waistband (IWB) holsters position the firearm inside the waistband for maximum concealment; outside-the-waistband (OWB) holsters are more comfortable for extended wear and popular for open carry and duty use. Avoid holsters without a full trigger guard enclosure.

A weapon-mounted light (WML) is a critical accessory for any firearm intended for home defense — identifying a threat before engaging it is both a legal and ethical requirement. Modern WMLs (Streamlight TLR series, SureFire X-series, Surefire Stiletto, Olight series) output 500–1,500+ lumens and can be mounted to a Picatinny or proprietary rail on compatible pistols and rifles. For home defense, a light with at least 500 lumens is recommended to create a sufficient "startle" response and temporarily impair an attacker's night-adapted vision. Ensure your holster is compatible with your light before purchasing — many holsters are light-specific.

Grip panels, sleeves, and stippling (adding texture to the grip frame) improve control under stress and in wet conditions. Factory rubber grip panels on revolvers can be replaced with wood, G-10, or rubber alternatives that change the feel and fill of the grip. For striker-fired polymer pistols, grip tape, adhesive grip panels, or professional stippling add texture to the polymer frame. Extended or swapped controls — magazine releases, slide stops, and aftermarket triggers — can improve the ergonomics and feel of a pistol significantly. Any trigger modification should be done by a qualified gunsmith to ensure the safety mechanism functions correctly and the trigger pull weight remains safe for defensive use.

A basic cleaning kit should include bore brushes and patches in your caliber(s), a cleaning rod or bore snake, a quality solvent (Hoppe's No. 9, Ballistol, or CLP), and a light lubricating oil. Boresnakes offer the quickest field-expedient barrel cleaning in minutes. Ultrasonic cleaners are popular for detail-cleaning semi-auto pistol components and revolver parts without disassembly. CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant) products simplify the cleaning process to a single product. Avoid over-lubrication — excess oil attracts debris and can cause malfunctions, especially in the trigger mechanism. Clean your firearms after every range session and inspect them before every use.

Transporting firearms in Pennsylvania requires that long guns and handguns in a vehicle be unloaded. Having a quality hard case (Pelican, Nanuk, or Plano) protects your firearms during transport and meets airline travel requirements when flying with firearms. For home storage, a full-size gun safe (Liberty, Fort Knox, Browning) provides fire protection and prevents unauthorized access. Quick-access pistol safes (biometric or push-button) allow rapid access to a defensive firearm while keeping it secure from children. Silicone-treated gun socks and dehumidifier rods inside a safe protect against rust in humid environments. Pennsylvania has no mandatory storage law, but responsible storage is strongly encouraged.
